How to be smart with the WordPress admin interface?

If you're working on a WordPress website, you've probably encountered the situation where you simply don't know how long to leave the browser open, when to log out or what happens if you suddenly shut down. These are small, but all the more important issues that can easily cause annoyance if left unattended. Now I've put together a detailed guide to help you become a professional web administrator and avoid common pitfalls.

1. Don't forget to save!

The most important rule for working in the admin interface: save your work after each change! Whether it's your product, page or setting. Without pressing the "Save" or "Refresh" button, any changes you make may be lost if the system logs you out or freezes your browser.

It's also a good idea to back up whenever you need to get away from the computer, even for a short time. Or even before a long phone call, so that you're not caught off guard in an unexpected situation and your work is not wasted.

It is also recommended to clear the cache from time to time, which may prevent a change from appearing on the website.

2. When do I have to check out?

You might think that logging out is only important if you're using a foreign computer, but it's more than that. If you're not using the admin interface for a long period of time or you've finished working, you it is advisable to log out manually. This protects the site from unauthorised access and prevents a login left in the browser from causing potentially disruptive session problems.

3. What happens if we just close the browser?

If you simply close the admin interface without logging out, this usually does not cause a problem. In most cases your work is already saved and when you log back in, the system will automatically keep you in or you will have to log back in. However, if you have not saved your changes, they will be lost in this case.

4. Why not turn off the machine suddenly?

Sudden shutdowns - such as a power cut or turning off your computer without saving - are especially dangerous when you're editing something. Not only can you lose your current work, but you may also encounter database errors or partial backups that make it difficult to use the site later.

5. Watch your internet connection!

Unsurprisingly, an unstable internet connection can easily stall backup processes. It is therefore advisable to work in an environment with a stable internet connection, especially during major setups or product uploads.

6. Safety, safety, safety!

Always remember that to protect your website never share passwords or admin access with unknown or untrustworthy people! The secret of a well-maintained site is controlled access.

7. Do not log in to multiple sites with the same account at the same time.

It's not a superhero movie to be in several places at once! If you are logged in to multiple devices simultaneously with the same admin account, there may be conflicts and the system may log you out of one place or another.

8. Back up regularly!

When making major changes or adding new features, always have a fresh backup of the site. If anything goes wrong, you can use this to restore it to a working state.

9. Use a reliable and updated browser!

A stable, up-to-date browser, such as Chrome or Edge, is essential for smooth use of the admin interface. Bugs and slowdowns can occur with outdated browsers.

10. Take a break!

Your brain needs a rest too! When you're tired, you're more likely to make mistakes, so take a break from work, have a coffee or go for a walk.

+1 tip: If you get stuck, don't be afraid to ask a professional for help!

You are not alone in web administration! You can always count on professional help, even from me. If you feel that something is wrong, it's best to fix it as soon as possible, rather than waiting until there is a major problem with your system, which is much more difficult, time-consuming and costly to fix. Don't stress, just ask and we'll fix it!

Summary

The WordPress admin interface is not complicated to use, but it requires attention. With these rules, you can avoid unnecessary mistakes, data loss and time wasting. Stick to them and I guarantee you'll have a smoother website maintenance experience.
